New MyKad fails eKYC verification at several providers; registration department responds
Key points
- The new-generation MyKad, issued from 18 September, is not being recognised by providers' eKYC systems.
- The National Registration Department says providers are updating systems but gave no deadline for a fix.
- Tests by a technology vendor found failures at TNG eWallet, Ryt Bank, AEON Bank and GXBank.
Facts
Issue: on 21 September 2026 Malaysia's National Registration Department (NRD/JPN) said eKYC providers are updating their systems to recognise the design and features of the new-generation MyKad, issued from 18 September. It gave no deadline for a fix and asked users to contact each institution for alternative verification. Source: The Star (21 September).
Affected providers: tests by eKYC technology firm Innov8tif found the new card failed verification at TNG eWallet, Ryt Bank, AEON Bank and GXBank. The firm plans to roll out support in early October. Source: Fintech News Malaysia (25 September).
Analysis
Fully online account opening and loan applications can be halted at the front door by a single change to identity documents. On 23 September, private credit bureau CTOS also suspended some services after unauthorised access, so in the same week both prerequisites of digital lending, identity verification and credit checks, suffered disruption.
Implications
Counterpoints and uncertainties
Issuance of the new card has only just begun, so the number of affected users is likely still small. The old card is presumably still valid, and the actual impact on application drop-off is unverified.
