Malaysia's July unemployment steady at 3.0%; youth rate at 10.2%

Employment: 16.85 million employed (up 0.1% month on month), of whom 12.62 million (74.9% of the employed) are employees and 3.16 million own-account workers. Same source.

Youth: unemployment among those aged fifteen to twenty-four was 10.2% (unchanged from June; 292,500 people); among those aged fifteen to thirty it was 6.4% (up from 6.3% in June). Same source. ²

Analysis

Regionally, Malaysia's 3.0% is half the Philippines' 6.0% (July, PSA). But youth unemployment in Malaysia is high at 10.2%, so overall stability coexists with youth vulnerability. With most job-seekers unemployed for under three months, labour-market turnover appears high.

Implications

Counterpoints and uncertainties

Because many of the unemployed have short spells, high youth unemployment does not necessarily translate straight into higher arrears. Small monthly moves (such as the broader youth band's up from 6.3% in June) may be within statistical noise.
